| This story resulted from a class assignment in a Synectics class. Synectics is a science of solving problems that helps the seeker of an answer to consider all possibilities--making the familiar strange and the strange familiar. The class was asked to describe how they are like a particular living animal or bird. What characteristics of the selected animal or bird best describes how you live your life. The story below is the result of fulfilling that task. Consider what may have happened in the writer's life that is wrapped allegorically in the story below. |
Soaring high with the Spirit of the Wind, I closely observed the flow of life below as I diligently sought that which would satisfy the hunger within. As I unconsciously use my tail and wings to follow the lifting force of the Spirit of the Wind and gain altitude to broaden my view of the reality below, my mind wanders back to earlier days when I first became aware of the Teacher.
I had welcomed the freedom gained when I left the nest my parents had built high up in a large tree. I had found the nest constraining, but I was now free and full of confidence in the certainty of building my nest and becoming the master of my destiny. After working many days on my nest and as its completion neared, my new nest collapsed under my weight and fell to the ground in pieces. I began again with greater care, selecting each piece for a specific location in the nest I visualized in my mind. Finally, it was finished. The Teacher then sent the Spirit of the Wind to test my nest. It crumbled, and the pieces were scattered from the force of the wind.
By now, the hunger within had grown because I had done little but work on building the nest I saw in my mind, and I flew over the deep waters seeking anything that would satisfy the hunger. "Higher, higher," spoke a voice in my mind. I flapped my wings harder and harder to gain altitude but could rise only slightly. "Remember the strength of the Spirit of the Wind," the voice in my mind stated. Then I realized I had been flying against the Spirit of the Wind instead of with him. I began to feel his movement around me and moved into his upward flow, which carried me higher and higher with minimal effort on my part. Finally, at a very high altitude, I saw that which would satisfy my hunger. I thanked the voice in my mind, which I now called the Teacher.
With my hunger satisfied I returned to the task of building my nest. What had I learned so far from the Teacher? I needed a nest with a strong foundation. My nest must be built through an understanding of the reality around me because it reflects the nature and purpose of the Teacher. Each piece of my nest must contribute in a way that strengthens it and must properly support the higher levels. With these thoughts in mind, I began building my nest.
I am still working on my nest today; for the Teacher reveals something new everyday that will strengthen it.
