Prelude: Louise loves cats. Over the past few years, the rate of growth in the size of her cat "family" has far surpassed that of probably 99% of the rest of the world. She quit telling anyone how many cats she had shortly after the number went into the double digits. When they ask her how many she has now, she politely responds, "There are three things I do not tell anyone-my age, my weight, and how many cats I have."
After commenting on a beautiful piece of Indian jewelry a friend was wearing, I began explaining how I had been searching the Internet for Indian jewelry and had found some very beautiful pieces. Valerie was listening and mentioned that she had some turquoise, heart-shaped earrings that had been in the family for many years; but none of her children or grandchildren appeared to want them. They had just been lying in a drawer for years.
The next time I saw Valerie she had the earrings with her. I loved them; and, reaching for my purse, I asked how much she wanted for them. She said they were a gift and insisted that I accept the gift over my protest that I should pay for them. After all, I saw the gift of the earrings as if someone had just given me a valuable family heirloom.
When I returned home and began admiring the earrings, I was deeply moved as I considered the generosity of the gift. Feeling a need to express my emotions to someone, I called my husband at work.
"I have been given a gift of love," I told him
With a kind of "Oh no" tone of voice he said, "Uh huh"
"Don't you want to know what it is?" I asked.
"No!" he answered emphatically.
"Why don't you want to know what it is?" I asked somewhat bewildered.
"Does it meow?!!" He stated in a tone of voice that conveyed how he knew immediately what it was.
